The name of the sunflowers, Helianthus comes from Greek. Helios means Sun and Anthos means flower. The name can be derived from Greek since it is commonly known that sunflowers have a custom of following the direction of the sun. During ancient times, the sunflowers were only cultivated because they were useful, not because of how pretty they were. Another story talks about Francisco Pizarro, who in 1532 saw the Incans worshiping a giant flower. Also, the priestesses in the Inca Empire used to wear around their neck giant golden flowers. Another legend says that the God of the Sun, Apollo, had a nymph who was pretty much in love with him. She was so in love with Apollo that she never stopped looking at the sun. Unfortunately, Apollo never noticed the water nymph and because of the other Gods, who pitied her, she was turned into a sunflower. According to the story, this is why the sunflowers turn around for the sun. It is because water nymph, even when she turned into a sunflower she followed the person she loved.

But sunflowers do not have a straight meaning. In different cultures, they represent different things. In China, sunflowers represent longevity, while in the Andes Mountains sunflowers can be found inside their temples. In North America, sunflowers are mostly grown for the oil, but people here also put a bowl of sunflower seeds on their dead’s grave.

In other cultures, sunflowers are also associated with loyalty, constancy, warmth, power and nourishment. But they also have a negative meaning, such as false appearance and unhappy love.
